So You Think You Can Write?: Ad Age On Campus

There is always room for improvement and one of the areas I am working on are my writing skills. I have recently been referred to Ad Age since they launched a new blog called, Ad Age On Campus.

It is targeted to college students who are interested in learning more about the advertising industry from recent graduates. My first post was last month, but you need a registration to read the postings here: http://adage.com/adage-on-campus/ Exciting! :)

Another area I am seeking to enhance are my web design skills since I have taken a web class for my Graphic Design minor at Baruch. The more practice, the better right? I even bought jessalinlam.com, but have to figure the content and design before launching it.

Just thought I would start up with my blog again and keep my motivation going. Can you believe it is almost the end of the year? I am happy it is only a three day week at work and I will be able to go home Wednesday night to my hometown to see my family and high school friends.

Happy early Thanksgiving and stay warm!

Perfect Balance

Listening to “Empire State of Mind” by: Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys and this song is a great motivation to remind oneself that there are so many opportunities in life…”where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do.. Big lights will inspire you”. I decided to play this song on repeat mode because it relates to the thought I had today about how life is what you make of it. Instead of waiting for things to come, it is better to chase what makes you happy and create the stories and experiences that make you happy in the long run.

Besides being the creator in life, the perfect balance is important. After I came back from Bahamas, I realized I was more relaxed and I can see why people desire vacation so much. Personally, I wish I could travel the world, but it is difficult to find the time and money to do so. Therefore, a balance is to work hard and play hard. We deserve the rewarding getaways once in a while to relieve stress and balance work and personal life.

Do you have the proper balance in your life? In the end, the key is what works for you to unlock your heart and mind to be at peace. Overall, I am living my life to the fullest and will continue to live, love, laugh, and learn. The challenges I face are only helping me become a better person because everything happens for a reason.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!!

Like an Energizer Bunny

20110718-073929.jpg

Did you know we are struggling in a recession? If that is new to you, you must have been on the moon because this economy has been down with hopes and dreams keeping us going.

I wrote the following on my Facebook status that inspired me to write this post:

Time is money,
So how do you use yours, honey?
Do you lay alone to enjoy the sunny
Or spend it with those who are funny?
Or do you care for the sick with nose runny?
Choose carefully how to use time as we are like an Energizer Bunny.
Reevaluate. Recharge. Repeat.

The reason I compare humans to Energizer bunnies is that we are all crazy busy doing this and that and eventually our battery dies from fatigue or being burnt out. In addition, when i was an account management intern at Wunderman, the HR asked wheres my battery to keep me so energetic since I was doing four internships at the time and always excited.

On another note, here is the breakdown of our valuable time:
1.) Reevaluate: We learn from mistakes and reevaluate how to make it better

2.) Recharge: Health comes first and we need to remember to relax and rest once in awhile despite an ongoing to do list.

3.) Repeat: We repeat what works for us in our daily lives that contribute to happiness.

Extend Your Path

Extend Your Path

Life is not a one way street unless you choose it to be. This post is honored to the High Line Park that announced the expansion opening yesterday, June 8th. I am so happy to hear that they found financial supporters and sponsors including Tiffany & Co. The High Line Park is one of my favorite places in NYC! I am even a member to support this amazing place that I love walking on to relax and have a breath of fresh air on this elevated park overlooking the pier.

On another note, this post is about how I believe in destiny, fate, and ideas of how everything happens for a reason. This is your path in your everyday life from birth to death.

The extensions of your path are created from yourself. Metaphorically, these extensions are opportunities that are created from being proactive and lucky. This leads me to share a personal story about how paths can extend after you take action and never give up:

I have always been career-oriented and when I was a junior at Baruch College, I was determined to find a summer internship. Since I did not have one yet by April, I started to think about what company I would like to work for and I decided to go through the company directory of this building I used to work in for Michael Geyer Architects because I recall graphic design companies in this building. I found a fascinating graphic animation company and cold called them to see if they are interested in hiring a marketing intern. It turns out that company was no longer around, but they said they could use marketing for their other company called Alternative Consumer.

Personally, I was not interested in an unpaid internship since this day and age, we should all teach ourselves to be more independent. Therefore, we agreed that I would write a marketing proposal of how I can contribute marketing their company blog utilizing social media and after she reads it, she will decide about compensation. Of course, I jumped to this opportunity immediately and typed up a proposal including uses of Facebook pages, Twitter, YouTube etc. Instead of waiting, at the end of the proposal, I suggested $15/hr since I saw a social media job paying $17/hr. This is when I took a chance and am grateful I was accepted to work for Maureen O’ Connor, CEO of Alternative Consumer. It was a memorable experience the summer of 2009 and after a month, I recruited a few friends to create a social media team to implement strategies that directed traffic to their site in addition to increasing awareness about Alternative Consumer.

In brief, life is about making it happen and taking actions towards your goals. If you are not happy with where you are going, you should go with your instincts to try an alternative choice and take a risk.

Happy Thursday and hope you have a wonderful week!

JLam

Hop Like A Bunny!

It’s not all about you

Can’t you pick up this clue

That I’m being true

To be one of the few

To help you get out

Yet all you do is shout

Making me cry and pout

To realize what lifes about

Society kills us with money

Even when you think I’m sunny

Suffering inside is not funny

But let’s hop like a bunny

And be strong to live each day

To the fullest with what we pay

Don’t listen to what they say

As long as you’re happy today! :)

Stay Sweet,

JLam :)

Sweet video to end the blog thank to Awesome Aldy for sharing this with me!

Free Yourself like Fireworks

I am such an early bird and woke up at 5:00AM and this may also be due to sleeping early last night after a good conversation with my friend, Helen. It made me realize how happy I am to have such amazing people surrounding me and this is why I always show appreciation to people all the time to make sure they know how thankful I am to be blessed to have these kind of people in my life.

Especially after watching the movie “Sucker Punch” the other night, it made me even more grateful that I should never take life for granted. It was not the best movie, but I try to make the best out of it since it came out of my pocket for two people and the start of the movie already started off with two killings (mother and sister) and the father put her in a mental institute where she saw even more killings. I would be traumatized and they even did a lobotomy on the main actress and it reminded me about what my friend always tells me:

“…what does not kill you makes you stronger…”

Sometimes I want to give up and feel like I am doing everything wrong with my life. I know we all learn from your mistakes, but others have it tough too or even worse, so I remind myself to suck it up and live my life because living through the challenges we face make us a better person in the end to grow and learn from experiences. When these kind of thoughts pass my mind, I go crazy searching for answers to my problems whether it is asking numerous people, googling articles, or I might keep busy with other work to keep my mind off my problems. However, I find the best way as a solution is to look for solutions and I calm myself down by listening to music to inspire me.

This leaves me off with sharing “Fireworks” By: Katy Perry with you and check out her video below:

Here are the lyrics from:
http://www.directlyrics.com/katy-perry-firework-lyrics.html
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting throught the wind
Wanting to start again

Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in

Do you ever feel already buried deep
Six feet under scream
But no one seems to hear a thing

Do you know that there’s still a chance for you
Cause there’s a spark in you

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you’re a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
You’re gunna leave ’em fallin’ down-own-own

You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe you’re reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road

Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow
And when it’s time, you’ll know

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you’re a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in awe-awe-awe”

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It’s always been inside of you, you, you
And now it’s time to let it through

Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ’em what your worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby you’re a firework
Come on slet your colors burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in awe-awe-awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

Feature A Hello Bar to Donate Today!

Just got back to the city from a wonderful weekend relaxing at home with my parents. I cut my hair at Marlene Weber, went shopping, and saw the movie Just Go With it featuring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. I would definitely recommend this comedy to anyone who wants a good laugh from beginning to end.

In addition to seeing my parents, I was able to have a quick coffee chat with a good friend I have known since the 6th grade! Best of luck to you, Jon and hope to see you soon! :)

Anyways, the main topic of this post is going to be about Japan. I am sure most of you have already heard about the tsunami that hit them? I was catching up with my e-mails and read about this cool feature called the “Hello Bar” to feature on your own website or blog for people to have a quick link to donate. I added mine to the right side of this blog where it says: ” HelloBar(1,9126); Help The Victims of the 8.9 Earthquake in Japan by Spreading Awareness and Aid. Visit http://goo.gl/wjZQz to donate” You can read the link from the Mashables article called “Run A Website or Blog? You Can Help Japan With One Code Snippet”: here.

Recently, I subscribed to Gawker suggested by Rodrigo and it has interesting news about all topics. Today there was an article about the updates from Japan including “The Latest Earthquake and Tsunami News“. Here are some briefs from this article:

The Latest Earthquake and Tsunami News

Japan continues to uncover the full extent of the devastation from this morning’s massive earthquake; meanwhile, tsunami waves head towards the West Coast of the U.S., and South America. The latest news updates are below.

  • Hawaii was spared any serious damage from the tsunami waves. Waves were projected to arrive at Northern California around 10:15 EST this morning, and in San Francisco around 11. Coastal residents in Oregon have evacuated. A warning has been issued, but San Francisco’s not expecting any major damage. Tsunami warnings remain in effect for the following countries: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, Russia, Fiji, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
  • The earthquake was the fifth largest in the world since 1900, and Japan’s largest in 140 years. Police now say they’ve found up to 300 bodies in the Japanese city of Sendai, close to the quake’s epicenter. Here’s an interactive map showing earthquake damage in the region.
  • You probably won’t be flying into Japan today. Tokyo virtually ground to a halt following the quake this morning: “But for a few minutes after the ground began to rattle, the concern burned into stoic Tokyoites’ faces was much bigger: What if this was the ‘big one?'”
  • UPDATE: In a news conference, President Obama said the U.S. will be offering all the assistance necessary to Japan. The Defense Department already has Naval ships heading to the area. The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Japan unless absolutely necessary, saying aftershocks could continue for “weeks.”

Hope everyone has a safe Sunday and feel free to leave a comment for anything about this post, other posts, or if you have any questions for me! I LOVE hearing from people and meeting new people.

Stay Sweet,

JLam
